Our energy solution for field crops

BayWa r.e. will help you build an agrivoltaic project adapted to fodder production and large-scale farming cultures.

BayWa r.e. is an expert in the development of renewable energy projects and has always worked in the agricultural sector. Our inter-row Agri-PV tracker technology makes it possible to combine renewable energy generation and agricultural production on the same plot. There are real synergies in this dual production to mitigate climate change.

The inter-row tracker technology from BayWa r.e. is similar to the principles of agroforestry, which combines two types of production using different rows and strata in the same plot. Trackers are mobile panels with a small footprint that follow the path of the sun for optimum energy production. Inter-row agrivoltaic technology allows you to maintain your agricultural activity while producing solar energy, and is compatible with the use of agricultural machinery.

BayWa r.e. will help you at every stage of your project’s development, without any investment or installation costs. At the end of the operation, the agrivoltaic installation is dismantled and the land is returned to its original state (verified by a bailiff), with components recycled or reused.

How does inter-row Agri-PV work?

The tracker works like a sunflower, adjusting its orientation to capture maximum sunlight. With the BayWa r.e. system, rotation is possible up to 180°. Farmers can control panel orientation while working on the plot to align with posts. Panel height and spacing suit crops and machinery.

The benefits of inter-row Agri-PV

Dual land use: maintenance of agricultural use plus energy production.

Additional income for the farmer.

A small footprint for an increasingly optimised cultivated area.

Reduced water and heat stress due to partial shade from panels.

Reduced soil erosion due to grass strips and mechanical wind protection.

Our Agri-PV projects

BayWa r.e. has constructed three installations with crop canopies (in Austria, Spain, and Germany) with a total output of around 5.4 MWp.

The Alhendin agrivoltaic installation in Spain was the subject of Europe’s first agrivoltaic power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Velux company. It is equipped with an inter-row agrivoltaic installation.

Criteria for an inter-row agrivoltaic project

  1. This technology is dedicated to plots used for fodder and field crop production

  2. Minimum 30 hectares required

  3. Variable panel spacing (maximum 18 metres)

  4. Maximum slope 8%
