Offshore wind: Harnessing the energy of the sea
Constructing offshore wind farms with BayWa r.e.
For over 30 years, we have been successfully deploying large-scale renewable energy projects worldwide to the highest quality standards. Since 2019, our business portfolio has expanded to include offshore wind power.
Our aim: to develop, finance, build and operate offshore wind farms to accelerate the development of large-scale renewable energies. In France, we are developing the 250 MW Pennavel offshore wind project in Southern Brittany, and are participating in the AO9 floating offshore wind tender.
Like onshore wind power, offshore wind power uses the force of the wind to transform the mechanical energy of rotating blades into electrical energy, which is then fed into the grid. At BayWa r.e., we're developing floating offshore projects to help this new technology take off.
The Pennavel project: Winner of the AO5 in France
The world’s first commercial floating offshore wind farm project
The Pennavel project, an offshore wind farm initiative led by BayWa r.e. and Elicio and endorsed as 'Breizh Content' by the Bretagne Pole Naval cluster, is the first commercial-scale floating wind farm in Europe.
Location of the project
The Pennavel project is located in southern Brittany, off the coasts of Lorient, Belle-Île-en-Mer, and Groix.
Key data
230 to 270 MW, equivalent to around 30% of the annual renewable energy production in Brittany.
Over 450,000 residents supplied with electricity each year
Over 30 permanent employees during the operational phase
Offshore wind: A vast horizon for France
Offshore wind farms are set to become one of the primary renewable technologies of the next decade. With over 3,500 km of coastline, France has the second-largest offshore wind farm potential in Europe and will be one of our primary markets for exploring future development opportunities.
With an ambitious target of 40 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050, the industrial sector and local stakeholders are preparing accordingly.
The appeal of offshore wind farms for investors
With a rapidly growing established market, offshore wind energy presents significant opportunities for experienced investors, developers, and power plant operators.
Offshore wind energy already contributes significantly to energy production in Europe, and this trend is expected to continue. By 2040, offshore wind farms are projected to become the leading source of electricity production in Europe.

Do you share our vision of a green future?
By developing these offshore wind farms, we aim to make a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition. Our aim is to deliver projects of the highest quality in the field of renewable energies and to realise our vision of a future that is more respectful of the environment.
BayWa r.e. is fully aware of the maritime, societal, economic, and environmental challenges associated with developing offshore wind farms. We are dedicated to working collaboratively with local communities and stakeholders, including maritime professionals and the local industrial sector, to address these challenges.
